Race report
Round 7 of the THORL race series took us to the chocolate box village of Yelling. Situated a few miles from St Neots in Cambridgeshire, the village hall is the home of SCHORC, South Cambridge HO Racing Club.
17 racers descended into the venue, with Paul Rose and Dave Peters making their THORL debut after a few months away from national race scene.
The Morning kicked off as usual with the Open Wheel races. With the majority of the field choosing to use the AFX Mega G+ platform, the pressure was once again on the Larkfield regular racers to show how much pace could be had out of the cars. Paul Rose, using the MG+ for the first time, was clearly on the pace, with high scores in all but one lane. A close midfield saw Callum, Dave H, Al Wood, Marc and Ash, all vying for places in the top tier finals. |
Top qualifier was the quiet, but quick Mick Hobden. Joining him the A final were Paul R and Andy W.
Al Twiddy and Louis was the first of the finals, with Louis the victor, celebrating in style! Dave Peters was the next of the finals victors, placing him a final with Ash, Marc and Henry. Both Ash and Henry struggling for pace, with Ash only being able to place one high score in the qualifiers. This would soon change as Ash found his pace, and won 2 finals, placing him the B Final. The B was won by Elliot, putting an end to Ash's streak. Elliot joined Mick, Paul and Andy in the A final. And that is the way it finished. A solid drive from all 4 drivers, with Mick taking a clear lead over Paul, Andy and Ash. |
After a quick bite to eat, the afternoon sessions took place. With almost 50/50 split for the 2 classes, there was to be no walkover victory!
How wrong could we have been. SCHORC are regular runners of the Marchon Chassis, and they took full advantage. Both Paul and Al making all other cars round them looking rather pedestrian! Callums fast Marchon, was just that, but keeping it on the track was the big question. Also struggling was Andy running an SRT, which was intent on loosing its traction magnets! The first of the Grand Touring finals was the Juniors Vs Andy. Louis and Josh were aginst Andy. Andy being the meany that he is, won, and moved into the B final. Dave P was the Victor of the B, and joined Paul, Al and Dave H in the A Final. The 2 on song Marchons blasted round the track, with Al taking the Grand Touring Win from Paul. |
In Le Mans, the first of the finals was won by Carol from Henry. This put Carol against Al T, winner from the morning Mick, and Marc. The Larkfield dominance was once again shown, as Mick was to join a now much faster Ash, Nick and Elliot. In the A final, Elliot took the win over Dad Mick, from Ash. A close final with only 1.5 laps separating the top 3.

The final set of races of the day was to be the PRO MOD races. A mix of Wizzards and Viper V1s in various guises would whizz round the track. The pace was with the upgraded Vipers showing laps by Al T and Andy in the very low 5s. The Pro 4s wre not too far behind, with the Wizzard of Clive right in the middle. Andy went onto win with the Viper, from Clives Wizzard. Alan T dropped down the order after a non score in one of the lanes, but showed the speed was there to win overall. Maybe next time?

The Winners for the day were:

After another cracking day, all the prizes were presented, and the track packed away.
