Race report
Sunday 26th June.
For the THORL season Finale, Larkfield Slot Car Club, based not too far from Maidstone would be the hosts. The Larkfield 1/32 track was used as a basis to lay the AFX and BSTS track upon. With the track making a few extra runs up the length of the table, the longest track of the season was created (151.46ft). The 'usual' THORL faces were joined by Phil Rees and John 'Razor' Lamb, travelling from Derby, bringing along Lexan bodies, body clips and more 3D printed goodies. The morning kicked off with the 19 racers beginning the Open Wheel Qualifying. All 19 drivers raced for 12 minutes, with the 3 best scores counting. Larkfields Gary Hobden was the fastest qualifier. 2nd was Andy, and Ash in 3rd. Championship Leader Elliot qualified 7th. Maybe it was the Pizza? The first of the finals, and it was Sofia, John, Louis and Carol. Carol was the victor, and stepped into the 'E' Final. The Winner of the 'E' was FLBT's Marc, very closely followed by Carol less than half a lap behind. In the 'D', it was starting to get very close, with Henry and Nick doing battle. Both drivers being separated by just over half a lap. Nick would step up into the C final. The C was won by Clive, who was up against DHORCs Phil, Dave and Nick. In the 'B' Elliot looked like he had regained his form, and won from Mick, Clive and Tony. The Final Open Wheel race of the season saw FLBTs Andy, against Larkfields Gary, Ash and Elliot. Ash took the early lead, but it was Gary who kept it on track, and continued to victory from Andy, Elliot and Ash. Gary would be the 7th different winner in the open class this season. |
.
A gorgeous lunch of Fish and Chips was delivered for lunch, re-energising all for the afternoon races.
It would be the last time the Grand Touring class would be run, and the end of an era for cars such as Marchon, Lifelike, and the SRT. 7 Drivers took part in the class, with Phil and John having a great SRT vs Super G+ battle. No surprise that Callum was the fastest Qualifier, with a Marchon which has always been quick, when it could be kept in the slot. Dave H was very close behind with a more consistent qualifying. Highlights were Louis who was having a great day, winning 3 of his mixed qualifiers against the LMP classes. First of the 2 finals, and Andys SRT was the pace setter aginst Louis, John and Phil. Andy would step into the A final, and Phil would be the leading DHORC driver ahead of John. The A final was won by Callum, incredibly close in matching his best score in the White lane. Clive was second with his LifeLike, ahead of Dave (using another LifeLike) and Andy. |
In Le Mans, the 12 drivers were led by Deane, using a 1.5 Short Wheel base Mega G. Nick Elliot had now re-found form, qualifying second from Mick, and the winner from the morning Gary.
Once qualifying was complete, the first final got underway, with HONKs Carol, Jim and Larkfields Sophia. Sofia would take victory and move into the C final. The C saw Sophia joined by Tony, Marc and Ash. Ash seemed slightly off pace, but enjoying the day, and moving up into the B Final. Ash Joined Henry, Nick and Gary. Nick won the heat and stepped up into the A Final. Nick joined fellow Larkfield racers Elliot and Mick, alongside Deane. Nobody else could match the pace of Deanes Jaguar bodied SWB MG, and took the Le Mans Victory from Nick, Elliot and Mick. Next Season, the Le Mans battle continues!!! |
In very fitting last race of the day, as many people as we could coerce, would take part in last ever PRO MOD race.
Cars and Chassis were dug out for one last blast of these immensely quick pocket rockets. Dave Peters who had been at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, joined the 15 other racers in the action. An eclectic mix of Wizzard, Slottech, Viper amongst others, banged round the track in sub 7 and 8 second laps. The PRO MOD class was borne from a Wizzard class, which introduced the fastest HO cars to the UK, and PRO MOD evolved with ever quicker cars. However, sometimes good things must come to an end, and it was its final swansong. In a rather fitting result, it was John 'Razor' who would win the final race of the season, using a VSR Viper. Andy finished second using a Viper (PRO 10), and Third was Clive using a Wizzard. |
The Winners for the day were:
Open Wheel: Gary Hobden

Grand Touring: Callum Norris
